A gas leak can occur in a variety of settings, including homes, caravans, RV's, businesses, and industrial facilities. Many factors, such as faulty appliances, damaged pipes, and improper installation or maintenance can be the cause of a gas leak.
What are Gas Leak Detectors?
Gas leak detectors are devices that detect the presence of gases in an area, often as part of a safety system. They are an important safety device for homes and businesses as they can alert you to potentially dangerous gas leaks before they cause a serious problem.
There are two main types of gas leak detectors for homes: natural gas and carbon monoxide.
- Natural gas detectors have been designed to detect leaks of natural gases, which is the main component of household methane. Natural gas is colourless and odourless, so it's important to have a detector in your home in case of a leak. Natural gas detectors typically use an electrochemical sensor to detect the presence of natural gas. When the sensor detects natural gas, it will trigger an alarm.
- Carbon monoxide detectors are designed to detect leaks of carbon monoxide (CO). CO is a colourless, odourless gas that can be deadly. CO detectors typically use an electrochemical sensor to detect the presence of CO. When the sensor detects CO, it will trigger an alarm.
Physical symptoms of gas exposure include:
- extreme fatigue
- breathing problems
- eye or throat irritation
- nausea
- dizziness
- headaches
